A Spike to Remember!
On a cold wintry day of February 20th, 2016 The Goan Overseas Association hosted their very first Beach Volleyball tournament. Beach Jam was intended to warm up the muscles and keep the spirit of volleyball alive through the winter. With 12 teams, and over 50 spectators crowding the indoor courts of North Beach Volleyball it turned out to be a Blast!
The games started out at 10 am with the sounds of DJ Kurupt, playing throughout the arena, the teams played a fierce round robin on two divisions to compete for the top spots. Each team played 5 other teams and points were awarded based on the outcome. Through the day the day, one could see people enjoying the tournament, dancing and even rock climbing.
The Games ended with the final around 4pm, with “Mix and Match” playing “Volleyball is a Garden”. The game was completed with a best out of 3, and “Mix and Match” taking the 1st place spot with “Volleyball is a Garden” in 2nd and “Thuties” in 3rd place. There was a special appearance by our president Mr. Selwyn Collaco who attended and performed the medal ceremony.
All in all it was a great success in bringing the community together and also raising some funds toward the Goan Charitable Organization. A Charity operated by Goans for Goans to assist in their times of need.
We would like to extend a special thanks to those on the Executive Committee and those who were volunteering the entire day including, Gordon D’Souza, Aggie D’Mello, and Romeo Dos Remedios. Further we thank everyone that came out and showed their support and are looking to the Next year where Beach Jam will be back in full force!
