GOAN OVERSEAS ASSOCIATION AWARD RECORD Name of Award: Brendon deSouza Award Value:$250 Awarding Body: The Goan Overseas Association Executive, on the recommendation of a selection committee. The selection committee will be comprised of the GOA Executive Education Chair and two individuals from the GOA general body membership. Description: Awarded to a young person (age 8-21 years) who has overcome adversity, of any kind, in their life and continues to strive for excellence in the areas of academics, sports (where possible) and community involvement and who displays attributes most like those of Brendon. The Brendon deSouza Award was launched in 2004. Twelve year old Brendon deSouza touched the lives of many people in our community during his battle with leukaemia, from 1999 to 2002. Brendon was compassionate and outgoing. He placed a high value on friendship and had a great sense of humour. He contributed to his community in a variety of ways. He enjoyed playing sports and took his academics seriously. He gained strength and courage during his illness from his strong faith. Submission Requirements: To be eligible, applicants must submit: I. A written testimonial (300-500 words) that describes how you are working to overcome hardship or adversity in your life; II. Evidence of participation in sports and their community; III. One to two letters of reference that describes their attributes/values; and IV. Must be a dependent of a G.O.A. member, thus must submit parent/guardian name and membership number. A nomination from a family member or friend of a prospective recipient is also welcome.
