“Vision without action is merely dreaming. Action with no vision is just passing time. But with vision and action you can change the world.†– Nelson Mandela Alisha Rebecca Fernandes is the 2006 recipient of the G.O.A.’s Victor Abreu Award. This particular award is given to a college / university student who has made exceptional volunteer contributions in their community. These role models have a commitment to remain active in extra-curricular activities and their education. An honour roll student, graduating from Grade 12 in 2006 with a 96% average, Alisha’s contributions to her school and her community are numerous. Some notable highlights include the 2006 Governor General of Canada Academic Medal, recipient of the 2006 Orillia Business Women’s Association – Young Women of the Year and the 2006 Lieutenant Governor of Ontario – Medal for Community Service. Alisha is also very active in her parish in Orillia where she provides support for disadvantaged youth. Alisha is the daughter of Glenn and Rosanna Fernandes. Her grandparents Noel Fernandes, Theresa Fernandes and Nick and Angela Bassoriello are very proud of their granddaughter’s generous involvement and tremendous success at such a young age. Familial support and encouragement have been integral to the development of her altruistic and hard working values. What does the future hold for Alisha? She will be attending the University of Guelph this year, and in fact will be receiving the prestigious President’s Scholarship from the university. She has developed a very strong vision for herself and for her community and continues to establish the groundwork to make that vision a reality: “Everyday I watch the world change, knowing that each day I can positively contribute to that change. We all have one life with which to make a difference in the lives of many, and I challenge myself to do so. I am active in my community, parish, and school because it is important to assist community organizations and charities that serve our society. I contribute to the improvement of our healthcare system by raising awareness and funds to support cancer research as a Canadian Cancer Society volunteer. I also volunteer weekly at our local hospital where I comfort the bed-bound, learn from the sufferings of others, and endeavour to bring happiness to those I serve. I am involved with Guardian Angels Parish and the Office of Catholic Youth because I believe religion is an important component of our lives. Through these activities I directly support those without the necessities of life – food, clothing, and a place to sleep – I share the Word of God and spread faith awareness among youth. One’s own life is enriched through service, so when I volunteer I experience the strength of the human spirit, can apply my talents, and often receive more from others than I have given. Humans are intended to help one another and when we do we build strong, safe, vibrant, inclusive neighbourhoods. The Victor Abreu Scholarship will assist me in opening doors to countless opportunities on the horizon and fulfill my goals by completing an undergraduate degree - Bachelor of Arts and Sciences (BAS)- and pursuing professional studies in medicine, optometry or pharmacy.†Alisha Rebecca Fernandes It is quite evident that Alisha’s academic record, community involvement and vision are indeed quite exceptional. We wish her all the best in all of her future pursuits.
