For the first time she shall be performing in the land of her fore fathers and the funds raised at this event shall be her way of saying thank you to Victor Hugo Gomes, curator of the Goa Chirta museum towards his efforts in saving a slice of Goa for posterity. “Jacinta Luis Jazz Quartet” will feature Jacinta Luis on vocals and piano, Ashton Colaco on saxophone, Colin D’Cruz on Bass and Lester Godinho on drums.
Jacinta is an accomplished jazz musician of Goan origin based in Canada. Her family’s musical roots can be traced to Goa. Every member of her family sang and played at least one instrument and jamming together was a popular activity at home. She grew to love the bossa novas and swing tunes her father’s band rehearsed in their den.
In 1971, the Luis family immigrated to Canada, settling in Montreal. Jacinta studied classical piano and pursued music courses at Dawson College and Concordia University. She completed MA in music education at the University of Victoria where she developed her interest in vocal jazz, arranging, composing as well as in educational philosophy and practice.
She has had a full performing career as a solo vocalist/pianist and in quartets. Jacinta is currently a full time professor of Music at Dawson College where she teaches courses in voice, jazz history & classical music history, and is able to share her passion for music with her students, performing with them at the college’s annual benefit concerts.
Ashton has been playing the saxophone professionally since 1990. He has performed on five star hotel resident contracts and in studio sessions in Mumbai and around the country. He has toured internationally with the only Indian band selected for the world renowned Henessey XO international jazz tour.
Colin is one of India's most versatile musicians who has made a mark for himself in several genres of music. He has been a member of over a hundred different live music ensembles spanning just about every genre of music. From a drum and bass jam band at a sidey pub to an eighty piece symphony orchestra at the prestigious N.C.P.A. theatre in Mumbai, he's played it all. He currently produces music out of his own studio at home in Sangolda and tours world wide with some of the India's most accomplished artistes.
Lester got into music at the age of six, studying violin upto grade five before switching over to drums. A natural switch considering he is the son of India's most illustrious drummer 'Leslie Godinho'. Lester's passion for music covers everything from classical to hip-hop where he nails down the pulse of the music with amazing virtuosity.
Jacinta put this ensemble together after reviewing each of the musicians sound on the internet through Jazz Goa's website. Even before arriving in India each member of the quartet got familiar with each others playing styles and things just fell into place at the rehearsals for the show at Goa Chitra on the 18th of December. As a tribute to her roots Jacinta will perform jazz versions of popular konkani songs like 'hanv saiba polttodi vetam' besides her own originals and of course jazz standards. Every tune on the bands repertoire will have Jacinta's signature arrangements with creative contributions being liberally made by local virtusos Ashton, Colin and Lester. The Jacinta Luis Quartet promises to be yet another entertaining night out for Goa Chitra patrons and music lovers in general.
The Jacinta Luis quartet promises to create a magical experience at the inspiring amphitheater of the Goa Chitra museum. Be there or you are sure to have missed a memorable evening
The event will start at 8.00 p.m. sharp on the 18th of December and is inclusive of dinner. There would be limited entry; members and guests are requested to confirm their booking by 2nd of December 2010 to avoid disappointment. For details contact on 08326570877/ 08322772910/09850446065 or email
