Goan Overseas Association Scholarships

Deadline for G.O.A. Scholarships – August 11, 2017.
Scholarships will be presented at the G.O.A. Awards Gala


Victor Abreu Award – $500

Awarded to a student going into first, second, third or fourth year at college/university who has actively contributed toward the betterment of their school and/or community. (students graduating from Grade 12 are also eligible to apply)

The recipient will:

  • Demonstrate leadership in his/her volunteer role and consistency in involvement over a period of one or more years
  • Show involvement in extra-curricular activity, for example, the arts (music) and/or athletics, etc.
  • Have a good academic record (minimum B – approximately 70%).

Special consideration will be given to students who can demonstrate involvement with the Goan Overseas Association in a volunteer capacity.

Submission Requirements

To be eligible, applicants must submit:

  • A description of his/her community involvement (300-500 words);
  • Two letters of reference will be required. (Including at least one community reference);
  • Official copy of their most recent transcript from the 2016/2017 academic year (photocopy is acceptable);
  • Must be a dependent of a G.O.A. member, thus must submit parent/guardian name and membership number

Brendon deSouza Award – $250

Awarded to a young person (age 8-21 years) who has overcome adversity, of any kind, in their life and continues to strive for excellence in the areas of academics, sports (where possible) and community involvement and who displays attributes most like those of Brendon.

Twelve year old Brendon deSouza touched the lives of many people in our community during his battle with leukemia, from 1999 to 2002. Brendon was compassionate and outgoing. He placed a high value on friendship and had a great sense of humour. He contributed to his community in a variety of ways. He enjoyed playing sports and took his academics seriously. He gained strength and courage during his illness from his strong faith.

Submission Requirements

 To be eligible, applicants must submit:

  • A written testimonial (300-500 words) that describes how you are working to overcome hardship or adversity in your life;
  • Evidence of participation in sports and their community;
  • One to two letters of reference that describes their attributes/values;
  • Must be a dependent of a G.O.A. member, thus must submit parent/guardian name and membership number.

A nomination from a family member or friend of a prospective recipient is also welcome. (For this type of submission, please include a letter in your own words describing how the prospective recipient has overcome hardship or adversity in their life)

Oscar Fonseca Award $250

Awarded to a high school graduate with high academic achievement (minimum standing as an Ontario Scholar in the 2016/2017 academic year).

The recipient will:

  • Have an outstanding academic record
  • Demonstrate involvement in extra-curricular activity, for example, the arts (music) or athletics, and/or volunteer activity

Special consideration will be given to students who can demonstrate active involvement in extra-curricular and the community during the academic year in which they received high academic standing.

Submission Requirements

 To be eligible, applicants must submit:

  • Official copy of their most recent transcript from the 2016/2017 academic Evidence of participation in extracurricular activities and/or community involvement, i.e., one letter of reference;
  • Must be a dependent of a G.O.A. member, thus must submit parent/guardian name and membership number.

Late Staff Inspector Paul Fernandes Memorial Scholarship

G.O.A partners with the Toronto Police to promote the Late Staff Inspector Paul Fernandes Memorial Scholarship.

Paul Fernandes of Goan origin was a pioneer in policing and was the first member of a visible minority group to reach the rank of Staff Inspector in Canada with the Toronto Police Service.

The South Asian – Internal Support Network (SA-ISN) of the Toronto Police Service has launched a Scholarship Program to recognize the contributions of the first South Asian senior officer, late Staff Inspector Paul Fernandes.

By awarding these scholarships, the SA-ISN will assist South Asian youth to achieve their educational goals and make a positive contribution to society.

For the year 2017, the SA – ISN initiative will comprise of 2, one-time educational scholarships of $5000 each to youth residing and attending school in the City of Toronto, and who will be attending a post-secondary program in the immediate academic school year. These scholarships are awarded to youth who have demonstrated leadership, academic achievement, a commitment to the community and are in financial need.

One scholarship may be dedicated to students who will pursue the following areas of study:
• Police Foundations
• Protection, Security and Investigation
• Community and Justice Services
• Correctional Worker Program
• Criminology, Crime, Law & Deviance
• Law or Criminal Justice Studies

The second scholarship is open to students who will pursue any post-secondary program of their choice.
