G.O.A. proud to be part of India’s Republic Day Celebration – January 31, 2010
Wednesday, 20 January 2010 19:48

Although India obtained its independence on August 15, 1947, it did not yet have a permanent constitution. The Constitution of India came into effect on January 26, 1950. This was, in fact, a deliberate act, signing the constitution on January 26, to mark and respect the freedom fighters who wanted January 26 as India's initial independence day. Rajendra Prasad was elected as the president of India.

January 26, 1950 is one of the most important days in Indian history as it was on this day the constitution of India came into force and India became a truly sovereign state. The country finally realized the dream of Mahatma Gandhi and the numerous freedom fighters who, fought for and sacrificed their lives for the Independence of their country.

To mark the importance of this occasion, every year a grand parade is held in New Delhi. The parade includes music and songs from different regions of India, which shows the cultural richness and diversity of the country.

Panorama India in conjunction with the Consulate General of India in Toronto will be celebrating India’s 61st Republic Day and the G.O.A. is proud to be part of the festivities by exhibiting two dances. What are you doing on Sunday, January 31st, 2010?
